Markus Riese and Heiko Müller met during their mechanical engineering studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt in the late 1980s. From then on, they spent their free time customizing bicycles from scratch, according to their views of what must have been true utility bicycle. In 1992, Markus had a completely new idea for folding bikes. A folding bike with double suspension and where these points that fix the suspension serve to bend the bicycle. This is how Birdy was born. A very comfortable foldable bike that bore no resemblance to the folding of the season.
In 1994, the family company found a bicycle manufacturer that transformed Riese & Müller into a real company. In June of 1995, Birdy was officially available to buy in Germany, Japan and USA.
Currently, Riese & Müller develops not only Birdy, but also conventional or cargo E-Bikes.
